Description

Embarking on a career as a licensed insurance agent in Wisconsin requires meeting specific pre-licensing education and examination requirements set by the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI). Our comprehensive pre-licensing and exam prep courses are designed to help you fulfill these requirements and succeed in your licensing journey.

Pre-Licensing Education Requirements:

Wisconsin mandates that candidates complete 20 hours of pre-licensing education for each major line of authority:

  • Life Insurance: 20 hours

  • Accident & Health Insurance: 20 hours

  • Property Insurance: 20 hours

  • Casualty Insurance: 20 hours

  • Personal Lines: 20 hours

Each 20-hour course comprises:

  • 8 hours covering the principles of insurance, general Wisconsin insurance laws, and ethics.

  • 12 hours focusing on policies, terms, concepts, and line-specific insurance laws.

These courses can be completed through classroom instruction, online learning, or self-study. For self-study options, a proctored examination is required to validate course completion. A disinterested third party or a currently licensed agent with no family or financial relationship to the student must serve as the proctor.

Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a Certificate of Course Completion, valid for one year. This certificate must be presented at the exam testing center, either in paper or electronic form, to be eligible to sit for the licensing exam.

Licensing Examination:

After completing the pre-licensing education, candidates must pass the state licensing exam administered by PSI Services LLC. The exam fee is $75 for each exam. A passing score of 70% is required.

Exam appointments can be scheduled online through PSI’s website or by phone. Candidates must bring two forms of identification and their Certificate of Course Completion to the testing center.

Fingerprinting and Background Check:

Wisconsin requires all resident applicants to undergo fingerprinting and a background check. Fingerprinting appointments can be scheduled through Fieldprint, using the code “FPWIOCIINSURANCE.”

License Application:

After passing the exam and completing the fingerprinting process, candidates can apply for their insurance license online through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) or an NIPR authorized business partner. It’s recommended to wait 48-72 hours after passing the exam before submitting the application to ensure exam scores are recorded.

Continuing Education:

Licensed insurance producers in Wisconsin must complete continuing education (CE) requirements to maintain their licenses. The specific CE requirements vary based on the line of authority and must be completed before the license renewal date. For detailed information on CE requirements, visit the OCI’s Continuing Education page.
