Description
To become a licensed insurance producer in West Virginia, you must complete specific steps mandated by the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner. This includes completing pre-licensing education, passing the licensing exam, submitting fingerprints, and applying for your license.
Pre-Licensing Education Requirements:
West Virginia requires candidates to complete pre-licensing education for each line of authority:

Property Insurance: 20 hours

Pre-licensing courses can be completed through classroom instruction, self-study, or online formats. However, the final exam for these courses must be monitored by a disinterested third party (someone with no personal or financial interest in the student’s success). A minimum score of 70% is required to pass the course exam and receive a Certificate of Completion. This certificate is valid for six months.
Licensing Exam:
After completing the required pre-licensing education, candidates must pass a state licensing exam administered by Pearson VUE. The exam fee is $84, and a passing score of 70% is required. Candidates are limited to eight attempts per line of authority and must wait 24 hours before rescheduling after a failed attempt.
Fingerprinting and Application:
Upon passing the licensing exam, candidates must schedule a fingerprinting appointment through IdentoGo. The fingerprinting fee is $49.25. After fingerprinting, applicants can submit their license application electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) website. The application fee is $50, and the application is valid for 60 days.
Continuing Education:
Licensed insurance producers in West Virginia must complete continuing education (CE) requirements to maintain their licenses. The CE requirements vary based on the line of authority and must be completed before the license renewal date, which is the last day of the producer’s birth month every two years.
