West Virginia Insurance CE

In West Virginia, resident insurance producers are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, including 3 hours in ethics. Additional training is mandated for those selling long-term care, annuity, or flood insurance products. Certain exemptions apply.

To maintain an active insurance license in West Virginia, resident producers must adhere to specific continuing education (CE) requirements established by the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner.

General CE Requirements:

  • Total Hours: 24 hours every two years

    • Ethics: 3 hours

    • Course Approval: All courses must be approved by the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner.

    • Course Repetition: Courses cannot be repeated for credit within the same two-year license term.

    • Carryover Credits: Up to 6 excess CE hours may be carried over to the next renewal cycle; excess ethics credits will be carried over as general credits.

Special Training Requirements:

  • Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance:

    • Initial Training: 8-hour course required before selling LTC insurance.

    • Ongoing Training: 4-hour refresher course required every two years.

  • Annuity Products:

    • Training: One-time 4-hour course required before selling annuity products.

  • Flood Insurance:

    • Training: One-time 3-hour course required before selling flood insurance, meeting the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) requirements.

Exemptions:

  • Non-Residents: Non-resident producers who have met the CE requirements in their home state are exempt from West Virginia’s CE requirements.

  • Limited Lines Producers: Producers licensed solely for pre-need burial insurance or telemarketing insurance products using a Commissioner-approved script are required to complete only 6 hours of CE training each biennial period, including 3 hours in ethics.

Additional Information:

  • License Renewal: CE requirements must be completed before renewing a license. It’s recommended to complete CE requirements well before the license renewal date to ensure a smooth process.

  • Verification: Producers can verify their CE credits and compliance status on the Prometric website at prometric.com.

  • Course Providers: Course providers must be approved by the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner.
