Virginia Insurance CE

In Virginia, resident insurance producers and consultants must complete 16 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, including 3 hours in ethics. For dual licensees, 24 hours are required, with at least 8 hours applicable to each license type. Public adjusters must complete 24 hours, including 3 hours in ethics. No more than 75% of CE hours may come from company-sponsored courses.

Description

To maintain an active insurance license in Virginia, resident producers, consultants, and public adjusters are required to fulfill specific continuing education (CE) requirements every two years, as outlined by the Virginia State Corporation Commission’s Bureau of Insurance.

General CE Requirements:

  • Single License Holders: 16 hours of CE, including 3 hours in ethics.

  • Dual License Holders: 24 hours of CE, with at least 8 hours applicable to each license type.

  • Public Adjusters: 24 hours of CE, including 3 hours in ethics.

  • Ethics Courses: Must be approved and may include Virginia Insurance Law and Regulations.

  • Company-Sponsored Courses: No more than 75% of CE hours may come from courses provided by insurance companies or agencies.

  • Carryover Credits: Excess CE hours may be carried over to the next renewal cycle if the license is renewed within the 90-day renewal period.

  • Course Approval: All courses must be approved by the Virginia Bureau of Insurance.

Special Training Requirements:

  • Long-Term Care (LTC) Insurance:

    • Initial Training: 8-hour course required before selling LTC insurance.

    • Ongoing Training: 4-hour course required every two years.

    • Content: Courses must cover specific topics identified in the Rules and be approved by the Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Board.

  • Flood Insurance:

    • One-Time Training: 3-hour course required before selling flood insurance.

    • Content: Courses must meet the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) requirements and be approved by the Bureau of Insurance.

Exemptions:

  • Non-Residents: Non-resident producers who have met the CE requirements in their home state are exempt from Virginia’s CE requirements.

  • Professional Designations: Producers holding certain professional designations (e.g., CLU, ChFC, RHU, CPCU, CFP, REBC, CIC, ACSR, CRM, SOFE, or IRES) who have completed their respective continuing education requirements may be deemed to have met Virginia’s CE requirements.

Additional Information:

  • License Renewal: CE requirements must be completed before renewing a license. It’s recommended to complete CE requirements well before the license renewal date to ensure a smooth process.

  • Course Providers: Course providers must be approved by the Virginia Bureau of Insurance.
