Tennessee Insurance CE

In Tennessee, resident insurance producers must complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, including 3 hours in ethics, to maintain their licenses. Additional training is required for those selling annuities, long-term care, or flood insurance. Certain exemptions apply.

Description

To maintain an active insurance license in Tennessee, resident producers are required to complete continuing education (CE) every two years. The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance outlines specific CE requirements based on license type and lines of authority.

General CE Requirements:

  • Total Hours: 24 hours every two years

    • Ethics: 3 hours

    • Lines of Authority: Courses can be in any line of authority as long as they are approved by the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance

    • Course Repetition: Courses cannot be repeated for credit within two years of the original completion date

    • Carryover Credits: Up to 12 excess CE credits may be carried over to the next compliance period; excess ethics credits will be carried over as general credits

  • Compliance Deadline: By the last day of the producer’s birth month every two years, based on odd/even birth year

Special Training Requirements:

  • Annuity Products: Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour “Annuity Best Interest” training course before selling annuity products.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance:

    • Initial Training: 8-hour course required before selling.

    • Ongoing Training: 4-hour refresher course every two years.

  • Flood Insurance: Producers must complete a one-time 3-hour course on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) before selling flood insurance.

Exemptions:

  • Experience: Producers who have been continuously licensed since January 1, 1994, are exempt from CE requirements.

  • Non-Residents: Non-resident producers who have met the CE requirements in their home state are exempt from Tennessee’s CE requirements, provided their home state grants CE credit on substantially the same basis as Tennessee.

Additional Information:

  • Course Approval: Only courses approved by the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance count toward CE requirements.

  • License Renewal: CE requirements must be completed before renewing a license. It’s recommended to complete CE requirements well before the license renewal date to ensure a smooth process.

  • Verification: Producers can verify their CE credits and compliance status on the State Based Systems (SBS) website at statebasedsystems.com.
