South Dakota Insurance CE

In South Dakota, resident insurance producers must complete continuing education (CE) every two years to maintain their licenses. The required hours vary based on the lines of authority held, with specific training mandated for annuity, long-term care, and flood insurance. It’s essential to complete all CE requirements before the license renewal deadline, which falls on the last day of the producer’s birth month.

Description

South Dakota mandates that resident insurance producers fulfill specific continuing education (CE) requirements every two years to ensure they remain informed about industry practices and regulations.

General CE Requirements:

  • License Renewal Deadline: Last day of the producer’s birth month, every two years.

  • Required Hours:

    • Single Line License (Life/Health or Property/Casualty): 10 hours of CE.

    • Dual Lines (Life/Health and Property/Casualty): 20 hours of CE, with at least 8 hours in each line.

    • Crop-Hail Qualification: 4 hours of CE, with 2 hours in certified crop-hail courses.

  • Course Restrictions:

    • No more than 50% of CE credits can be from courses sponsored by a single insurance company.

    • Courses cannot be repeated for credit within the same two-year license term.

    • Excess CE hours cannot be carried over to the next renewal cycle.

Special Training Requirements:

  • Annuity Products: Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour “Annuity Best Interest” training course before selling annuity products.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance:

    • Initial Training: 8-hour course required before selling.

    • Ongoing Training: 4-hour refresher course every two years, to be completed within the normal two-year renewal period by the end of the producer’s birth month.

  • Flood Insurance: Producers must complete a one-time 3-hour course on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) before selling flood insurance.

Exemptions:

Certain individuals are exempt from South Dakota’s CE requirements, including:

  • Producers holding limited licenses (e.g., credit life and credit health insurance).

  • Producers over age 65 who have been licensed in South Dakota for at least 10 years and do not sell, solicit, or negotiate insurance.

Additional Information:

  • Course Approval: Only courses approved by the South Dakota Division of Insurance count toward CE requirements.

  • License Renewal: CE requirements must be completed before renewing a license. It’s recommended to complete CE requirements well before the license renewal date to ensure a smooth process.

  • Verification: Producers can verify their CE credits and compliance status on the Sircon website at sircon.com/southdakota.
