Description
Embarking on a career in New York’s insurance industry requires meeting the state’s licensing requirements, which include completing pre-licensing education and passing a state exam. The New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) oversees the licensing process, ensuring that candidates are adequately prepared to serve the public.
Pre-Licensing Education Requirements:
Candidates must complete a DFS-approved pre-licensing course corresponding to their desired line of authority:

Life Insurance: 20 hours

Accident & Health Insurance: 20 hours

Life, Accident & Health Insurance: 40 hours

Property & Casualty Insurance: 90 hours

Personal Lines Insurance: 40 hours

Public Adjuster: 40 hours
These courses are available through various approved providers and can be taken in-person or online. Upon completion, candidates receive a Certificate of Completion, which is required to register for the state licensing exam.
Licensing Process Overview:

Complete Pre-Licensing Education: Enroll in and complete the required hours for your chosen line of authority through a DFS-approved provider.

Pass the Certification Exam: Achieve a minimum score of 70% on the course’s final exam to obtain your Certificate of Completion.

Schedule and Pass the State Exam: Register for the licensing exam through PSI Services LLC at psiexams.com. Bring two forms of valid identification to the exam.

Apply for Your License: After passing the state exam, submit your license application through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) at nipr.com.

Maintain Your License: Stay informed about continuing education requirements and renew your license as mandated by the DFS.
