A one-time 3-hour course on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is also required for those licensed to sell property and casualty insurance.

Description

To maintain an active insurance license in Vermont, resident insurance producers must fulfill specific continuing education (CE) requirements every two years, as outlined by the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation (DFR).

General CE Requirements:

  • Total Hours: 24 hours every two years

    • Ethics: 3 hours

    • Classroom or Equivalent: At least 12 hours must be completed through classroom or classroom-equivalent courses.

    • Course Approval: All courses must be approved by the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation.

    • Course Repetition: Courses cannot be repeated for credit within the same two-year license term.

    • Carryover Credits: Excess CE hours cannot be carried over to the next renewal cycle.

Special Training Requirements:

  • National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP):

    • Requirement: A one-time 3-hour course on the NFIP is required for all producers licensed to sell property and casualty insurance.

    • Applicability: This requirement applies regardless of whether a producer sells flood insurance.

    • Timing: The course must be completed after the first renewal or eligibility for renewal of the license.

    • Frequency: This is a one-time requirement and does not apply to future review periods.

Workers’ Compensation Adjusters:

  • CE Requirement: After the first license renewal or eligibility for renewal, workers’ compensation adjusters must attend and satisfactorily participate in a continuing education seminar administered by the Vermont Department of Labor.

  • Frequency: The seminar must be attended every two years to maintain license eligibility.

  • Contact: For more information, contact the Vermont Department of Labor at (802) 828-2286.

Exemptions:

  • Non-Residents: Non-resident producers who have met the CE requirements in their home state are exempt from Vermont’s CE requirements.

  • Professional Designations: Producers holding certain professional designations (e.g., CLU, ChFC, RHU, CPCU, CFP, REBC, CIC, ACSR, CRM, SOFE, or IRES) who have completed their respective continuing education requirements may be deemed to have met Vermont’s CE requirements.

Additional Information:

  • License Renewal: CE requirements must be completed before renewing a license. It’s recommended to complete CE requirements well before the license renewal date to ensure a smooth process.

  • Verification: Producers can verify their CE credits and compliance status on the Prometric website at prometric.com.

  • Course Providers: Course providers must be approved by the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation.
