South Carolina Insurance CE

In South Carolina, resident insurance producers are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, including 3 hours in ethics and 8 hours in each line of authority held. Certain exemptions apply, and excess credits may carry over.

Description

To maintain an active insurance license in South Carolina, resident producers must adhere to specific continuing education (CE) requirements as outlined by the South Carolina Department of Insurance.

General CE Requirements:

  • Total Hours: 24 hours every two years

    • Ethics: 3 hours

    • Lines of Authority: 8 hours in each line of authority held (e.g., Life, Health, Property, Casualty)

    • Remaining Hours: The remaining hours can be in any line of authority

  • Compliance Deadline: By the last day of the producer’s birth month in even-numbered years for those born in even years, and in odd-numbered years for those born in odd years .

  • Course Repetition: Courses cannot be repeated for credit within two years and one day of the original completion date .

  • Carryover Credits: Up to 18 excess CE credits may be carried over to the next compliance period .

Special Training Requirements:

  • Annuity Products: Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour “Annuity Best Interest” training course before selling annuity products.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: An initial 8-hour training course is required before selling, followed by a 4-hour refresher course every two years.

  • Flood Insurance: Producers must complete a one-time 3-hour course on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) before selling flood insurance.

Exemptions:

  • Age and Experience: Producers who are at least 65 years old and have held a South Carolina license continuously for 25 years may apply for a CE exemption .

  • Limited Lines: Producers licensed in limited lines such as credit, title, travel, and surety are exempt from CE requirements .

Additional Information:

  • Course Approval: Only courses approved by the South Carolina Department of Insurance count toward CE requirements.

  • License Renewal: CE requirements must be completed before renewing a license. It’s recommended to complete CE requirements well before the license renewal date to ensure a smooth process .

  • Verification: Producers can verify their CE credits and compliance status on the State Based Systems (SBS) website .
