Rhode Island Insurance CE

In Rhode Island, resident insurance producers must complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, including 3 hours of ethics. Additional training is required for those selling annuities, long-term care, or flood insurance. Adjusters have specific CE requirements effective for licenses expiring in 2026 and beyond.

Description

To maintain an active insurance license in Rhode Island, resident producers and adjusters are required to complete continuing education (CE) every two years. The Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation outlines specific CE requirements based on license type and lines of authority.

General CE Requirements for Producers:

  • Total Hours: 24 hours every two years

    • 3 hours must be in ethics

    • A minimum of 5 hours must be completed in each line of authority held by the producer

    • Courses may not be repeated within a 2-year license term

    • Up to 12 excess CE credits may be carried over to the next license term; excess ethics credits will be carried over as general credits

Special Training Requirements:

  • Annuity Products: Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour “Annuity Best Interest” training course before selling annuity products. Those who completed a 4-hour annuity course prior to April 1, 2021, must complete a 1-hour annuity best interest course or retake the new 4-hour course.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: An initial 8-hour training course is required before selling, followed by a 4-hour refresher course every two years.

  • Flood Insurance: Producers must complete a one-time 3-hour course on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) before selling flood insurance.

Adjuster CE Requirements:

Effective for licenses expiring in 2026 and beyond, resident adjusters and non-resident adjusters with Rhode Island as their designated home state must complete:

  • Total Hours: 24 hours every two years

    • 3 hours must be in ethics

    • 21 hours of general adjuster-specific coursework

Additional Information:

  • Course Approval: Only courses approved by the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation count toward CE requirements.

  • License Renewal: CE requirements must be completed before renewing a license. It’s recommended to complete CE requirements well before the license renewal date to ensure a smooth process.

  • Exemptions: Producers who are at least 55 years old and have held a Rhode Island license continuously for the last 25 years without any interruption or lapse may qualify for a CE exemption.
