Description
To maintain an active insurance license in Oregon, resident producers and adjusters are required to complete continuing education (CE) every two years. The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation (DFR) outlines specific CE requirements based on license type and lines of authority.
General CE Requirements:
-
Resident Producers and Adjusters: Must complete 24 hours of CE every two years, including:
-
3 hours of ethics
-
3 hours on Oregon statutes and administrative rules, including recent changes
-
No more than 4 hours in approved agency management courses
-
A maximum of 8 hours of CE credit can be earned in a single day
-
-
Consultants: No CE requirements
Special Training Requirements:
-
Annuity Products: Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour “Annuity Best Interest” training course before selling annuity products. This training includes information on types of annuities, taxation, and appropriate sales practices.
-
Long-Term Care Insurance: An initial 8-hour training course is required before selling, followed by a 4-hour refresher course every two years. The training covers topics such as long-term care services, state and federal regulations, and consumer suitability standards.
-
Flood Insurance: Producers must complete a one-time 3-hour course on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) before selling flood insurance. Additionally, 2 hours of ongoing flood-related CE are required every two years.
Additional Information:
-
Course Approval: Only courses approved by the DFR count toward CE requirements.
-
Carryover Credits: Excess CE hours cannot be carried over to the next renewal cycle.
-
Course Repetition: The same course cannot be repeated for credit within a 2-year license term.
-
Non-Resident Licensees: Generally exempt from Oregon CE requirements if they meet their home state’s CE requirements. However, non-resident adjusters must have completed at least 3 hours of law in their resident state similar to Oregon’s requirement or take a 3-hour Oregon law course.
-
License Renewal: CE requirements must be completed before renewing a license. CE providers have 15 days to report course completions, and updates to your transcript take at least 24 hours to register with the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). It’s recommended to complete CE requirements well before the license renewal date to ensure a smooth process.
