Description
Embarking on a career in Ohio’s insurance industry requires meeting the state’s licensing requirements, which include completing pre-licensing education and passing a state exam. The Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) oversees the licensing process, ensuring that candidates are adequately prepared to serve the public.
Pre-Licensing Education Requirements:
Candidates must complete an ODI-approved pre-licensing course corresponding to their desired line of authority:
-
Life Insurance: 20 hours
-
Accident & Health Insurance: 20 hours
-
Property Insurance: 20 hours
-
Casualty Insurance: 20 hours
-
Personal Lines Insurance: 20 hours
These courses can be completed through classroom instruction, self-study, or online formats. Upon completion, candidates receive a Certificate of Completion, which is valid for 180 days and required to register for the state licensing exam.
Licensing Process Overview:
-
Complete Pre-Licensing Education: Enroll in and complete the required 20-hour course for your chosen line of authority through an ODI-approved provider.
-
Pass the Certification Exam: Achieve a minimum score of 70% on the course’s final exam to obtain your Certificate of Completion.

-
Submit Fingerprints for a Criminal History Background Check: Complete fingerprinting as part of the background check process. Details are available on the ODI website.
-
Apply for Your License: After passing the state exam, submit your license application through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) at www.nipr.com.
