Pre-Licensing Education Requirements:

Minnesota mandates completion of pre-licensing education for each line of authority:

  • Life – 20 hours

  • Accident & Health – 20 hours

  • Life, Accident & Health (combined) – 40 hours

  • Property – 20 hours

  • Casualty – 20 hours

  • Property & Casualty (combined) – 40 hours

  • Personal Lines – 20 hours

Upon completing the required coursework, you must pass a final certification exam with a minimum score of 70%. This exam must be monitored by a disinterested third-party proctor, as per state regulations. Successful completion grants you a Certificate of Completion, which is a prerequisite for scheduling your state licensing exam.

Licensing Process Overview:

  1. Complete Pre-Licensing Education: Enroll in a Minnesota Department of Commerce-approved course corresponding to your desired line of authority.

  2. Pass the Certification Exam: Achieve a minimum score of 70% on the final exam to obtain your Certificate of Completion.

  3. Schedule and Pass the State Licensing Exam: Register for the exam through PSI at psiexams.com or by calling (866) 395-1006.

  4. Submit Fingerprints for a Criminal History Record Check: Undergo fingerprinting as part of the background check process. Details are available on the Minnesota Department of Commerce website.

  5. Apply for Your License: Submit your application via the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) at nipr.com.
