California Insurance CECalifornia Insurance Continuing Education is not your normal Hollywood production. The California Department of Insurance in Sacramento requires California Insurance License holders to complete Insurance Continuing Education every 2 years. Classroom Equivalent Courses and Self-Study Insurance Courses are required for CE Credit within California as well as requiring 4 hours of Ethics Insurance Courses at each renewal. California Insurance Agents who are Life & Health agents only are required to take 24 hours of California Insurance CE, if you hold a California license for Fire/Casualty you must complete 25 hours of California Insurance CE. Personal Lines or Limited Lines Auto Insurance California License holders are required to complete 20 hours of California Insurance Continuing Education every 2 years.

Additional California Insurance Continuing Education Requirements:

  • Annuities - All agents who sell annuities must complete a one-time 8 hour Training courses followed by a 4 hour training course every two years thereafter.
  • Homeowner's Insurance - All resident Fire/Casualty and Personal Line brokers who sell homeowner's insurance are required to complete a one-time 3 hour homeowner's insurance valuation training.
  • Flood - All producers who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time 3 hour flood training course.
  • LTCP - All insurance agents prior to selling LTCP products in California must complete a one-time 16 hour Training course of which 8 hours must be taken in the classroom and the remaining 8 hours can be a self-study online. After the initial 16 hour LTCP training requirement, insurance agents who are licensed less than 4 years must complete 8 hours of classroom training every year for the first 4 years. Agents licensed more than 4 years are required to complete 8 hours of classroom training every 2 years thereafter.
  • Long Term Care - All agents must who sell LTC products must complete a one-time 8 hour training course and those licensed less than 4 years must complete 8 hours of ongoing training every year thereafter for the 1st 4 years. Agents licensed more than 4 years must take 8 hours of ongoing training every 2 years.

California Insurance Agents can carry over any credit to the next renewal period except for Ethics credits and you cannot repeat any course within the same renewal period.

As of January 1, 1998, any California Insurance License holder who is 70 years of age or older and has 30 continuous years as a California license holder in good standing will be considered exempt from California Insurance Continuing Education.
